Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) is a colorless, waxy, flammable solid or liquid with a camphor-like odor. It can be made into large parts by reaction transfer molding (RTM) or reaction injection molding (RIM), and has excellent dimensional stability, higher toughness, stiffness and corrosion resistance than traditional unsaturated polyester resin, good machinability, high surface quality, so it is increasingly favored by various application industries.

Polydicyclopentadiene, or DCPD, is a highly reactive thermoplastic resin formed by the Diels-Alder addition reaction of two cyclopentadiene molecules, resulting in two stereoisomers: inner-DcpD and exo-DCpD.
DCPDS readily copolymerize with a number of vinyl monomers and resins, including alkyd resins, unsaturated esters, phenolic resins, and epoxies, acting as reactive thinners, crosslinkers, and hardeners.

One of the most important applications is the production of unsaturated polyester resins, which can be made into large pieces by reaction transfer molding (RTM) or reaction injection molding (RIM). DCPDS improve the machinability (higher filler content) and surface quality of sheet and bulk molded parts consisting of fiberglass/fillers and unsaturated polyester. They also provide excellent dimensional stability (higher thermal deformation temperature and lower shrinkage), as well as higher toughness, stiffness and corrosion resistance than conventional unsaturated polyester resins.

Another important application is EPDM rubber (ethylene propylene diene monomer). When copolymerized with alkenes, DCPDS provide a cross-linking site for vulcanization.
In addition, DCPDS are also used in high quality optical lenses and products such as hot melt adhesives, varnishes and paints.
